(CUMMING, GA)  The Sawnee Electric Membership Foundation (Foundation), announced today that the Foundation Board has approved funding totaling $63,925 to local charities and educational projects, as well as donations to thirty-six (36) local schools served by Sawnee EMC to fund hot lunches for students in need.

The Foundation School Lunch Program initiative was launched in 2019 to assist with funding school lunches for children who may not have the means to purchase a “hot lunch”.  Of the schools receiving lunch funds during the 4th Quarter gifting, thirty-four (34) are located in Forsyth County and two (2) are in Dawson County.

These grants are made possible in part by generous Sawnee EMC members who voluntarily participate in the Sawnee EMC Operation Round Up program.  “We are always excited to be able to help children in our area.  The school lunch program has proven to be successful and continues to build strong community relationships,” states Blake House, Vice President of Member Services.  He further states, “Operation Round Up is a great way for our members to give back and know that it stays local.”

The Foundation Board approved $18,895 to the following 501(c)(3) organizations:

  • Historical Society of Forsyth County, Inc.
  • Society of St. Vincent de Paul
  • Mentor Me – North Georgia, Inc.
  • Rachels Gift
  • FertilizHER Soul
  • Rosas Gift, Inc.
  • Senior Services North Fulton, Inc.

Additionally, the Foundation Board approved $6,300 through its Bright Ideas program to local teachers for innovative projects that will be implemented in their classrooms:

  • Mike Yeager – East Forsyth High School
  • Rebecca Johnsen – Black’s Mill Elementary School
  • Nick Crowder – Alliance Academy for Innovation
  • Hannah Hawlk - Whitlow Elementary School
  • Charlotte Stevens – North Forsyth High School
  • Abigail Green – Whitlow Elementary School

Through Operation Round Up, Sawnee EMC members contribute an average of $6 per year, but these small donations have allowed the Foundation to donate $4.4 Million back into the communities since 2003.
